MCALLEN, RGV – In this week’s look back at the last seven days of border-related news, we focus on public education and in particular the new accountability ratings issued by the Texas Education Agency.
Region One Education Service Center assists school districts in the Rio Grande Valley and Laredo. The new TEA rankings show every school district in the region garnering an “A” or a “B.”
Over the past week we have interviewed Cornelio Gonzalez of Region One, Daniel P. King of PSJA ISD, Narciso Garcia of Vanguard Academy, J.A. Gonzalez of McAllen ISD, Bethany Solis of IDEA Public Schools, and Ruben Cortez of the State Board of Education.
By happenstance we have also featured U.S. Rep. Vicente Gonzalez. He spoke at the India Association of the Rio Grande Valley’s India Independence Day celebrations, and at a luncheon hosted by the Rio Grande Valley Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Just for good measure, we did a Facebook LIVE event with the congressman.
We also featured Hidalgo County Judge Richard Cortez’s concerns about the high rate of poverty in his county. And we looked at a new Texas A&M AgriLife initiative to help producers grow healthier food.
All of these topics are included in the news wrap-up for weekending August 24, 2019.
