AUSTIN, Texas – Reform Immigration for Texas Alliance held a rally on the south steps of the state Capitol on Wednesday to push for legislation that will help undocumented immigrants.

Among the issues important to RITA are preservation of the law that allows undocumented students to attend college at in-state tuition rates and giving undocumented immigrants the opportunity to apply for a driver’s license.

More than 200 of those participating in the rally came from the Rio Grande Valley. Proyecto Juan Diego, La Unión del Pueblo Entero and Project ARISE took three buses to Austin, setting off from the Valley at 5 a.m. Members of these groups cheered when Celina Moreno, staff attorney for the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, spoke against increased militarization of the border.
