MISSION, RGV – Stalwart Hidalgo County Republican leader and governmental affairs consultant Hollis Rutledge of Mission was involved in a rollover accident just south of Falfurrias on Thursday afternoon.
Rutledge and the driver of the vehicle, consultant Sam Maldonado of Pharr, were taken to Mission Hospital where both are recovering from their injuries.
The pair were returning from a business meeting in Corpus Christi when, at around 3 p.m., they had a blowout on one of the tires of their truck. The truck rolled over four times and Rutledge ended up at the back of the truck.
“I got pretty banged up, more so that Sam. Thank God, Cindy was in town,” Rutledge told the Guardian via phone from his hospital bed.
Cindy Leon, chair of the Texas Public Safety Commission, which oversees the Texas Department of Public Safety, is Rutledge’s wife.
Rutledge is former chair of both the Hidalgo County Republican Party and the Texas Republican County Chairmen’s Association. He served in President Reagan’s administration as regional director of the General Services Administration. He is co-founder of Hollis Rutledge & Associates.
Rutledge said he might get moved from Mission Hospital to an acute care facility in McAllen for more tests. Top Hidalgo County Republican and McAllen Chamber of Commerce governmental affairs committee chairman Fred Farias visited Rutledge in hospital on Thursday evening, along with members of Rutledge’s family.
