Now that the law has changed, open government advocates have been able to find out how much the City of McAllen paid pop star Enrique Iglesias to perform at its 2015 Christmas Parade: $485,000.

The package included a chartered flight from Guadalajara, Mexico and two dozen hotel rooms. As well as specialized catering to suit Iglesias’ palate.

For four years the City of McAllen said it could not disclose the details of the contract agreed with an agency representing Iglesias, pointing to a Texas Supreme Court ruling that limited access to certain government documents. However, legislation championed by state Rep. Terry Canales of Edinburg and carried by state Sen. Kirk Watson of Austin meant the press and public could see the dollar amount paid to Iglesias.

The City of McAllen has acknowledged it lost money on the 2015 parade.
