RAYMONDVILLE, RGV – Aurelio “Keeter” Guerra was sworn-in as Willacy County Judge at a ceremony at the old county courthouse on New Year’s Day. The courtroom was packed with family, friends and supporters.

Among the dignitaries present were state Sen. Eddie Lucio, Jr., state District Judge Migdalia Lopez of the 197th Court, and Willacy County Sheriff Larry Spence.

Guerra deviated from the traditional format and asked many of the dignitaries present to simultaneously swear him into office as a sign of his commitment to inclusiveness.

“It is time for Willacy County to come together and work in a united fashion,” Guerra later told the Rio Grande Guardian. “We all have to work together to move the County forward. For example, when we are trying to recruit new business to the county, we will be so much stronger if we have our cities and our county commissioners working in unison, providing a show of strength. I think we are headed in the right direction.”

Guerra has previously served as an interim county judge and county commissioner for Precinct 4.
