Governor Greg Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and House Speaker Joe Straus have announced a $3.8 billion tax relief package for Texas businesses and homeowners. They say the agreement reached, along with additional legislation, includes a 25 percent permanent reduction in the business Margins Tax and a $10,000 increase in the Homestead Exemption, subject to passage of a Constitutional Amendment adopted in the November election. The trio say they support SB 1760, which requires a 60 percent vote of the governing body of any taxing unit wishing to adopt an increase in property taxes that exceeds the effective tax rate.
In today’s News in Pictures we focus on legislation working its way through the 84th Legislature, preparations for another “surge” in immigrants from Central America and a potential liquefied natural gas terminal at the Port of Brownsville.
