Edinburg, TX – Executive Commissioner of the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, Cecile Young, has appointed Daniel Tamez, DHR Health VP of Clinical Supportive Medicine, to serve as the physician assistant representative on the Palliative Care Interdisciplinary Council.

The Council was established in 2015 to assess the availability of patient-centered and family-focused palliative care in Texas and is charged to consult and advise HHSC on matters related to the establishment, maintenance, operation, and outcome evaluation of the state wide palliative care consumer and professional information and education program.

Tamez, a product of the Rio Grande Valley, completed his undergraduate studies in Pre-Med and Biochemistry at The University of Texas Pan American and his graduate studies in Public Health and Management from Texas A& M University.

After completing his medical training at UTPA College of Health Science PA Studies, Tamez joined DHR Health as one of the founding clinicians for the DHR Health Palliative Care Department and eventually transitioned into the role of Vice President of Clinical Support Medicine.

“My passion for the advancement of palliative care allowed me to continue my higher education completing a Doctor of Science degree from A.T. Still University, School of Medicine with a defended dissertation on the importance of early palliative care interventions. With this appointment on the HHSC Executive Council, I look forward to use my experience, expertise, and personal perspective in palliative care to assist in the development of health policy and promote evidence-based practice on early access to palliative care services provided to those patients and families facing a serious illness,” said Daniel Tamez.
