McALLEN, RGV – There is a treasure trove of useful information on the U.S. Census Bureau website that will make for a good news story, information on things like population trends, demographics, household income, housing and educational attainment.
Pauline Nuñez, data dissemination specialist for the U.S. Census Bureau, is going to help reporters in the Rio Grande Valley find that information at a training session in McAllen today.
Nuñez’s Data on Deadline event runs from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., on Wednesday, February 24, at the UT-Rio Grande Valley McAllen Teaching Site. The training session is free and refreshments will be provided. Among those expected to attended are news reporters and editors, citizen journalists, bloggers and researchers. Reporters from Spanish language media outlets are especially welcome because Nuñez is fluent in Spanish.
“Need data for a news story? This hands-on training immerses participants in Census Bureau data, the most relied-on source for detailed, up-to-date socio-economic statistics covering every community in Texas,” Nuñez said.
“Who should attend? Print media, broadcast and internet news, and any news organization that delivers news stories to the public in the Rio Grande Valley.”
Nuñez is based in Denver, Colorado. However, she is a regular visitor to the Valley, often teaching local government workers and Valley business executives how to better access the Census Bureau website.
“Participants will navigate the U.S. Census Bureau website, census.gov’s data tools, interactive maps and quick searches,” Nuñez said. “This will increase the participant’s ability to find population numbers, make race/ethnicity comparisons and locate social/economic characteristics i.e., educational attainment, income, occupation, and poverty status for the communities they serve.”
The Data on Deadline trainng session is co-sponsored by the U.S. Census Bureau and the Rio Grande Guardian.
