MCALLEN, RGV – Prominent civil rights attorney Jim Harrington will be the keynote speaker at tonight’s celebration of MLK Day at Cine El Rey.

It is the theater’s 10th annual MLK event and includes a Commemorative Symbolic Walk.

Other community leaders slated to participate are Sister Norma Pimentel of Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley and McAllen City Commissioner Seby Haddad.

Jim Harrington

Harrington is founder of the Texas Civil Rights Project and was attorney for the late civil rights icon Cesar Chavez. The president of the Cine El Rey Group, Bert Guerra said Harrington will stress “the importance of incremental change at the 10th Annual MLK Celebration.

Guerra referenced a video on Facebook that features Harrington discussing this theme. Click here to watch the video.

“While Jim Harrington may be best known as the attorney who sued the City of McAllen for the infamous police brutality during the 1970s and 1980s, his homecoming will provide a very important message of healing and forgiveness,” Guerra said.

“Indeed, Jim Darling, the current Mayor of McAllen, was the McAllen city attorney who lost every case Harrington brought against the city. However, they have remained good friends and have mutual respect for each other.”

Guerra said Harrington’s return to the Valley could be viewed as a homecoming.

“Jim Harrington’s return to McAllen Texas to lead The 10th Anniversary MLK Commemorative Walk and give the keynote speech for MLK Day at Cine El Rey demonstrates the importance of incremental change. His dedication to peace, love and justice, specifically in the Rio Grande Valley, gave a voice to those who were not heard and a face to those who were not seen,“ Guerra said.

“His return to McAllen reminds us that even though there is still and perhaps will always be work to be done in seeking justice, that pursuit demonstrates that MLK’s Dream is alive and well in this part of America we call the Rio Grande Valley.”
