IDEA Camp RIO at historic Lula Sams in Brownsville exists to provide students with a quality outdoor educational experience that will enhance classroom learning.
Students spend their day at Camp RIO outside, exploring the world around them. Through hands-on experiences, students learn to identify plants and animals, develop teamwork and communication skills, acquire skills in various outdoor activities, and develop a respect for nature and wildlife.
Activities offered at Camp RIO include canoeing, geocaching, plant and animal identification, photography, survival skills, archery, and more!
The camp spans 85.7 acres on the north end of Brownsville, Texas. It’s a land untouched by urbanization, home to various native plants and animals that, in most places in the Rio Grande Valley, have long been eradicated.
In coordination with the Valley Land Fund, a non-profit organization that works to conserve land through acquisition or holding land easements, IDEA Public Schools preserves this unique piece of land so that generations to come may enjoy it in its natural form.
Studies show students are spending less time outside, and more time being sedentary. Camp RIO provides an additional opportunity for students to be active and learn and interact with nature and the outdoors. Research shows that students who spend time interacting with nature:
• Have higher test scores
• Learn better across disciplines
• Are able to concentrate more
• Stay engaged in school
There’s so much to learn from nature and the world around us–that’s the philosophy at IDEA Camp RIO at Historic Lula Sams. Educators at Camp RIO have a passion for the outdoors, delivering an active, world-class, and exciting outdoor education camp to students in the Rio Grande Valley.
A Student’s Testimonial
“That first day at Camp RIO was a day I’ll never forget. At first, some activities were a little scary for me and my friends, like canoeing. It was my first time on a boat, and sometimes I don’t think I’m a strong swimmer, but with the help of the staff members at Camp RIO, I was able to conquer my fears. The instructors understood that a lot of us had never canoed before, and they let us know that they were there to teach us and help us if we got stuck. That’s what Team & Family is all about! My classmates and I got to enjoy the rest of the day cheering each other on when we hit targets, and learning about different reptiles and the environments they inhabit. Since I attended Camp RIO, I’ve started to spend more time outside with my brothers and sisters and have even gone on nature walks with my family. Camp RIO is a special place to me because it taught me to face my fears and provided me with new and exciting experiences!”
