BROWNSVILLE, RGV – Congressman Filemon Vela has hit out at the escape from prison of Joaquin El Chapo Guzmán, the world’s most famous drug lord.

El Chapo, Guzmán is known, escaped Mexico’s maximum-security Altiplano prison through a tunnel, according to authorities. It is the second time he has escaped prison in Mexico. He first escaped in 2001 and was on the run until last year. At the time of his recapture there were calls for him to be extradited to the United States. A huge manhunt across Mexico is underway and the United States has offered to help.

Vela, D-Brownsville, has urged the State Department to do a lot more to help Mexico battle its drug cartels. He issued this statement on Facebook:

“Extradition is an important weapon in the U.S.-Mexico effort against the drug cartels. Our inability to get Mexico to extradite Chapo Guzmán, and indicted Tamaulipas Governors Tomas Yarrington and Eugenio Hernandez Flores is an insult to the law enforcement and prosecutorial personnel who have worked for years to build criminal cases against these drug profiteers.

“The United States needs to exercise stronger diplomatic muscle, ensure the recapture of Chapo Guzmán and see to it that these three individuals be brought to the United States at once to face the charges that have been levied against them.”
