McALLEN, Sept. 4 - The Small Business Administration has named Francisco Guerrero, founder and president of Edinburg based-Valley Metro Security, as its Minority Small Business Person of the Year for the Rio Grande Valley region.

VMS provides armed and unarmed security officers to high level clients, which locally include South Texas College, the City of Edinburg, and major corporations who have operations on the U.S. side of the border.

VMS is also currently contracted by the Department of Homeland Security, the U.S. Marshals Service, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and the Federal Bureau of Prisons. The company provides services ranging from federal courthouse security to federal detention facilities management. VMS also provides staff for hospital confinements and prisoner escorts.

Every year for the past 28 years, the SBA has partnered with the Department of Commerce Minority Business Development agency in order to recognize the success of minority owned small businesses across the country.

Guerrero was honored at an event at Border Capital Bank in McAllen. Present with Guerrero for the event were Sylvia Zamponi, district director for SBA in the Rio Grande Valley, Cynthia Sakulenzki, president and CEO of the McAllen Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Salomon Torres, regional director for the office of U.S. Rep.
